This usually refers to moves that are less than 100 miles and within the same state. What is an intrastate move? This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state. What should I do to prepare my appliances before my move? Make sure that appliances such as your microwave, dishwasher and washing machine are completely empty before the move. You may also need to hire professionals to disconnect any electric and water connections. Do I have to hire packers or can I do this myself? You can certainly choose to pack your belongings and hire employees to transport them for you. However, you can also hire professional packers who are very experienced and have access to the proper packing equipment. Can my moving company store my items temporarily? Some moving companies will temporarily store your items in a safe storage facility. However, you have to pay for any warehouse valuation coverage, final delivery charges from the warehouse and any storage charges. How can I lower the cost of my move? Try to book your move Monday through Thursday because weekends are usually busier and more expensive. Yes, you should spend your time packing boxes and have friends and family members spend their time carrying the boxes to the moving truck. Can I leave my clothing in dresser or chest drawers? You can leave lightweight clothing such as blouses, lingerie, shirts and sweaters in drawers. However, don’t leave heavy items such as sheets, table linens or books in drawers because they damage the furniture. Also remove any valuable or fragile items before the move. Do I need to make special preparations for an international move? Yes, make sure to inquire about necessary import fees, custom duties and required documents for international moves. Will my furnishings remain clean during the move? Professional movers will make every attempt to ensure your items remain clean by covering them with plastic material or special furniture pads. What is an order for service? This is a signed written agreement authorizing your moving company to transport your goods. Why do movers place shipments from more than one household on a trailer during long distance moves? This is much more efficient and allows the moving company to lower their costs. Direct shipments are usually available, but they will cost you more. |
